About the Instrument

The sensual sound of the piano has become an essential part of every composer’s collection. While most felt pianos are uprights recorded with a practice pedal, we’ve extended this concept to the grand piano. After experimenting with different materials, we settled on a thin layer of cotton wool between the hammers and strings.

This produces a richer, darker tone, and when recorded in a large concert hall, creates a striking contrast to our other felt piano, the Woodchester Piano, which was recorded in a small, dry studio.

Expanding the library even further, we’ve included 14 Atmosphere Layers—pads that blend seamlessly into the raw sound of the piano—as well as a versatile set of controls. These elements are explored through eight carefully crafted snapshot presets introduced in the latest update, which serve as a great starting point when exploring darker musical genres.

A Delicate Touch

The new update introduces response controls that let you limit the dynamic range, isolating the softest velocity layer and enhancing the signature “felt” sound. The instrument still responds naturally to keyboard velocity without affecting the overall volume.

Detailed Control

As with all of our piano libraries, we took great care in sampling Midnight Grand, capturing every nuance, including the mechanical sounds of the pedals and hammers. We’ve also added a room tone control, allowing you to restore the natural ambience captured by the microphones that is often lost in the sample cleaning process.
